Nokia recently released its latest candybar slider handset in the Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition of MTVE. First unveiled back in March as the Nokia 5330 XpressMusic, the handset was slated for release in the 3rd quarter but has been superceded with the added TV receiver.Sporting the same elegantly styled slider body, the new Nokia 5330 gets revived to take advantage of the DVB-H TV broadcasts that are now fully deployed in many European countries. They include the Netherlands, Albania, Austria, Finland and Poland, with France and Spain joining them soon. Russia is expected to roll it out next year in key cities. Outside of Europe, Nokia fans in Vietnam, parts of India and in northern Africans countries like Namibia, Nigeria, Kenya and Morocco can enjoy TV watching on their handsets soon.

TV Features

It may take getting used to watching video or TV on its 2.4-inch QVGA screen even when switched to landscape viewing but it gets the job done quite competently. There a dedicated set of keys on the body for channel search and volume control. It has a programme guide (OMA BCASR ESG) than can scan, discover and update channel station broadcasts. You also get 30-second instant replay for those moments you missed as well a recording feature so you can watch your favorite program later. You also get reminded of your programmed stations on the program guide.

The Nokia 5330 MTVE is a quad band GSM/GPRS/EDGE and a tri band 3G/UMTS on a stylishly elegant slider body that measures 101.2 x 48.5 x 12.25mm and tipping a mere 114 grams on the weighing scale. Apart form the modest display mentioned above which by the way, support 16 million colors, you get a 3.2 megapixel camera with LED flash and 4x digital zoom which can also do video recording. Photos and videos can be uploaded to the Ovi share site from its Opera Mini Browser that supports Flash Lite 3.0. Multimedia function has a media player that supports all the audio and video codes commonly used in the market with video playback in the 25 fps rate that can be zoomed up to 14 times.There’s a modest 70 MB internal memory that gets microSD expansion support for up to 16 GB, Bluetooth 2.1 plus EDR, full USB 2.0 support and an industry standard a 3.5mm AV jack. Unfortunately there’s no WiFi, so you can’t use the handset to surf in hotspots. Its 1000 mAh BL-4U li-ion battery provides up to 7 hours of talk time and 16 days of standby time on 2g. You get 30.5 hours on music listening and 5.2 hours on TV playback on a single charge.The Nokia 5330 Mobile TV Edition handset is also an eco-friendly handset that comes with a high efficiency battery charger, a body made from nickel free plastic and a box packaging made from recyclable paper.

Availability

The handset is expected to become widely available in the countries deploying the DVB-H TV broadcasting standard within the first quarter of 2010. Nokia has pegged its SIM-free price at €155. The package will come with a 1GB microSD slot and you’ll have a choice of black or white body colors. This is certainly a bargain for a TV phone and even as just an entertainment versatile handset without it.
